Free Money-Saving Garden Tips

We’ve got unseasonably mild weather here in Atlanta, and it’s making me think about springtime and gardening. I’ve never had a green thumb, but I hope to change things around this year.

I did some online research on ways to save money while gardening. Here are a few top tips that we can all do:

1. Honor Earth Day (April 22nd) by creating a composting bin. Easy directions are here.

2. Organize a plant exchange. Maybe make a trade with a neighbor, or with friends at a community garden, but get out there and try to swap plants to increase variety without increasing cost.

3. Use existing household containers for planting. Nearly anything that holds soil and has holes for drainage can work for planting, including jugs, baskets, cans, and even old shoes!

4. Get educated. I plan to read gardening magazines. You could pick up some, too, look for online help, or check out some books from the library on ways to successfully garden in your climate. Good luck!
